BC Project Connect
Cell Phone Drive

IN PARTNERSHIP WITH UBC WOMEN'S HEALTH INITIATIVE  -  FOR SURVIVORS OF IPV

For many people, a cell phone provides a means of connection with other individuals and fosters autonomy. For survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV), a new cell phone, and a new number, can provide not only safety, but access to independent life.

Backstory

Backstory.

Project Connect is an initiative started by couple of fourth year medical students at Memorial University in Newfoundland who recognized that a new cell phone could positively impact survivors of intimate partner violence by helping them start over.

The project kicked off at Memorial at the end of 2020 and saw significant success right away, with donations of 50+ gently used cell phones and $1500+ to local organizations supporting survivors in the community.

Honing to the pilot’s success, Project Connect has spread to include universities from all over Canada which are already at various stages in the project.

UBC Chapter.

Project Goals:

Facilitate access to resources for survivors so they can start their new lives safely and independently

Foster meaningful connections with local womxn’s shelters to assess the needs of individuals in their care

Partner and collaborate with other Project Connect Chapters across Canada to advocate with and on behalf of survivors of intimate partner violence
